Why Tenerife and not somewhere else
When someone decides to learn kitesurfing, the first question is where. Tarifa, Fuerteventura, Greece, Lake Garda. There are many options. Tenerife — specifically El Médano — consistently appears among the world's best learning destinations not because of tourism marketing but because the conditions make learning genuinely easier.
El Médano has three advantages that are rarely found together: quality summer wind, shallow water without dangerous currents, and mild temperatures year-round. Add direct flights from across Europe and you understand why instructors like me have spent decades working here with students from dozens of countries.
El Médano: the spot
El Médano is a coastal village in southern Tenerife, about 15 kilometres from Reina SofÃa Airport (TFS). The main beach is long, wide and protected by the volcanic Montaña Roja to the west. That mountain channels the wind directly onto the beach with remarkable consistency during summer.
The sea floor is sandy and gradual — you can walk 50 metres from shore without the water reaching your waist. For a beginner learning kite control, being able to stand up when something goes wrong is genuinely reassuring.
The wind: what nobody explains
Here is something important to understand: the wind at El Médano is not constant throughout the year. Anyone who tells you otherwise is exaggerating. The NE trade winds blow reliably from June to September, typically starting between 11am and 2pm and running until sunset. Expect 15 to 25 knots most days — ideal for beginners.
From October to May the wind exists but becomes less predictable. For beginners planning a learning trip, summer gives you the highest probability of usable wind.
How long it takes to learn
Most people without previous water sports experience complete the essential learning — kite control, bodydrags and first board rides — in 9 to 12 hours of instruction. That's roughly 3 to 4 days of lessons.
Those hours don't make you an independent kitesurfer who can head to any spot in the world. They make you someone who can fly the kite safely, move through the water with control and ride the board on basic runs. That's the starting point from which the learning continues independently.
What kitesurfing in Tenerife costs
A complete beginner course costs between €400 and €600 at most schools in El Médano. The price always includes full equipment. For accommodation, expect €60 to €120 per night for a self-catering apartment. Flights from most European cities range from €80 to €200 depending on season. A week learning kitesurfing in Tenerife can be done for €800 to €1,400 all-in — a reasonable cost for an experience very few people forget.
Physical requirements
Kitesurfing doesn't require being an athlete. Basic fitness helps — you'll be active for 2 to 3 hours at a time. Most healthy adults learn without any specific preparation. If you have existing back, shoulder or knee injuries, mention them before the first lesson so we can adjust equipment or technique to minimise risk.
I've taught people from 14 to 65 years old. Age isn't the barrier most people think it is.
Safety: the real picture
Kitesurfing has a reputation for being dangerous that, with proper instruction, doesn't reflect reality. Most accidents happen from one of three causes: no instruction, faulty equipment or ignoring conditions. Good instruction removes all three.
Modern kite equipment has a quick release system that disconnects you from the kite in under a second. Learning to use it is one of the first things we practise in the course — before going near the water.
How to get started
If you want to begin before arriving in Tenerife, the free course on this website covers all the theory you need: wind, equipment, first steps, safety and the progression to your first ride. It's the same content I cover before the first water sessions. Message me on WhatsApp if you have questions about dates or availability — I respond in English, Spanish or German.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to learn kitesurfing from scratch?
Most people complete the basic learning — controlling the kite, bodydrags and first board rides — in 9 to 12 hours of instruction spread over 3 or 4 days. The most important factor isn't time, it's wind conditions and the quality of instruction.
When is the best time to kitesurf in Tenerife?
June to September has the most consistent wind at El Médano, with the trade winds blowing regularly. Outside that window, wind exists but is less predictable. For beginners, summer is the safest time to plan your learning trip.
Do I need to be fit to learn kitesurfing?

How much does it cost to learn kitesurfing in Tenerife?
A complete beginner course of 9 to 12 hours typically costs between €400 and €600 at most schools. The price includes full equipment: kite, bar, harness, board and wetsuit if needed. You don't need to buy anything to get started.
